Minnesota’s Retirement Savings Crisis

On April 7, 2017, CRI’s Executive Director Angela Antonelli participated in a forum held in St. Paul, Minnesota, to discuss the retirement savings crisis in Minnesota and ways that a state-administered savings plan could help Minnesotans without access to employer-sponsored retirement savings plans. Also featured were: Doug Loon, President, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce; Emily Piper, Commissioner, Minnesota Department of Human Services; and Teresa Rasmussen, President, Thrivent Financial. DOL Rules: Options, Opportunities, and Challenges

On September 12, 2016, CRI hosted the event DOL Rules: Options, Opportunities and Challenges, which featured two panelist discussions: Expanding Access: A Discussion of the Path Forward and Perspectives on Options, Opportunities and Challenges. A video of the event may be viewed here.

CRI Roundtable: States & Stakeholders Discussion on DOL’s Proposed Rule and Guidance

On December 10, 2015, the CRI hosted a roundtable states and stakeholders discussion about Department of Labor’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Interpretive Bulletin related to state retirement savings arrangements, issued on November 18, 2015. The objective of the roundtable was to discuss the interpretation of the DOL’s policies and how they would work with states’ retirement security initiatives. Photos for the event may be viewed here.

Saving: America’s Challenge and Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century

A distinguished group of experts gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities of financial retirement readiness, including state-based savings initiatives and market innovations in service and distribution. Presenters and panelists included leaders and decision makers from state savings initiatives, as well as UK representatives from government, the pensions industry, and their state-sponsored retirement plan, the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST).  The two-day event featured presentations from industry leaders and innovators in the savings space, with a discussion of the Who, What, How and Why of the next chapter in retirement readiness.

Retirement Security in a Changing America

On Friday, October 23, 2015, Washington, D.C., the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, in partnership with the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University and The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement at Drake University, hosted a thought leadership symposium on the critical issue of Retirement Security at Georgetown University. Distinguished presenters included Rep. Chris Smith, former Senator Tom Harkin and former Rep. Lynn Woolsey. CRI Founder Kathleen Kennedy Townsend spoke about state retirement initiatives.

States and Retirement Security Stakeholders Meeting

The CRI hosted a roundtable discussion with California Treasurer John Chiang and Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs, members of CRI’s Council of State Advisors.  The purpose of the meeting was to gather grassroots organizations who have been instrumental advancing retirement security initiatives at the state level to visit with the Treasurers and their key staff for an update on the status of program implementation and to discuss key issues and challenges.  We appreciate the participation of organizations including AARP, AFT, AFL-CIO, Brookings Institution, CFED, Latinos for a Secure Retirement, National Council of LaRaza, NCPERS, Pension Rights Center, SEIU and WISER. NCSL/NCPERS State Initiatives on Retirement Security Symposium

On August 6, 2015 in Seattle, Washington, NCPERS in collaboration with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) sponsored a State Initiatives on Retirement Security Symposium. Angela Antonelli, CRI’s Executive Director, moderated a panel on the future of state initiatives with State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-IN); State Senator Todd Weiler (R-UT); State Rep. Retirement Expert Meeting

On April 21, 2015, a meeting was held about sustainable pension plans and the role of private sector savings. It was an initiative of Smorenberg Corporate Consultancy and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in cooperation with the Georgetown Center for Retirement Initiatives. New America Forum

On April 1, 2015, New America Forum hosted the event “Retirement Security Federalism: Illinois Secure Choice and the Future of Saving” in Washington, D.C. CRI’s Executive Director Angela Antonelli discussed states and retirement security federalism. Click here to view the video from the event.

NAST 2014 Issues Conference

On December 4, 2014, The Center for Retirement Initiatives hosted a panel discussion about state retirement plan initiatives as part of the National Association of State Treasurers’ 2014 Issues Conference in New York City.
